Short answer: Most credible AI SEO retainers cost $2,000 to $10,000 a month in 2026.

Entry-level work starts near $1,500. Audits run $1,500 to $15,000. Enterprise programs can pass $25,000.

Why the wide gap? It follows the workload: strategy only, or strategy plus content, technical fixes, off-site mentions and tracking.

Why do AI SEO quotes look so different?

Ask three agencies and you’ll get three numbers. One says $1,200. One says $6,500. One wants a call first.

Nobody is necessarily lying. They’re pricing different jobs under the same label.

Three things cause it:

  • No official benchmark. No standards body publishes GEO or AEO rates. Every average comes from agency surveys or price pages.
  • Relabeling. Some agencies sell regular SEO with an AI sticker on it.
  • Hidden scope. A $3,000 plan with advice only is not the same as a $3,000 plan with four published articles and tracking.

One survey of 300+ agencies found 54.3% raised prices in 2025–26, mostly to add AI search services. Yet only 4.7% said they track AI citation share as their main KPI.

Pricing moved faster than measurement.

Four AI SEO pricing tiers in 2026: Foundation $1,000–$3,500, Growth $3,500–$8,000, Scale $8,000–$15,000, Enterprise $15,000+ per month

What does AI SEO actually include?

AI SEO is regular SEO, extended so your brand shows up inside AI-written answers.

Three labels get used, and agencies mix them:

  • AEO (answer engine optimization): make your pages answer questions cleanly.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): get mentioned or cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Much of this happens off your site.
  • AI Overview optimization: target Google’s AI summaries.

Google says there’s no special markup or secret requirement for its AI features. Normal SEO fundamentals still apply.

So the new costs sit in three places:

  • Answer-first content
  • Off-site authority and mentions
  • AI visibility tracking

All three are labor and tooling. That’s what you’re paying for.

Is AI SEO worth the money?

For most search-driven businesses, yes. Start in the right order, though.

The case for it:

  • Google reports AI Overviews have passed 2.5 billion monthly users, and AI Mode has passed 1 billion.
  • SparkToro found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026.
  • Ahrefs found an AI Overview can cut clicks to the top result by about 58%.
  • Brands cited inside an AI Overview earned about 35% more clicks than uncited ones at the same position (Seer Interactive, 2025).

When the answer sits on the results page, being named in it is the visibility you get.

The catch: AI answers lean on pages that already rank. In an Ahrefs study of 1.9 million citations, 76% came from pages in the organic top 10.

Weak SEO basics? Fix those first.

A note on the stats: estimates of how often AI Overviews appear vary a lot. Conductor measured about 25% of searches in Q1 2026. Ahrefs reported far higher on its desktop keyword sets. Check your own priority queries.

What do you get at each price level?

Foundation: $1,000–$3,500 a month

  • FAQ and organization schema
  • A few key pages rebuilt answer-first
  • 1–2 AI platforms monitored
  • 2–3 content pieces
  • A short list of priority queries (often 10–15)

Works for: local businesses and small sites in low-competition niches.

Struggles with: beating well-funded national competitors.

Growth: $3,500–$8,000 a month

  • Ongoing technical SEO
  • 4–8 answer-focused articles
  • Entity and schema work
  • Tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google
  • Some earned mentions

Works for: most growth-stage SaaS, ecommerce and service brands.

One published benchmark puts a mid-market retainer with 2–4 content pieces at $5,000–$8,000 once off-site work is included.

Scale: $8,000–$15,000 a month

  • 10–20 content pieces
  • Digital PR
  • Custom monitoring dashboards
  • A dedicated strategist

A full AEO + GEO + citation program usually lands here.

Enterprise: $15,000–$50,000+ a month

  • Multi-market or multi-brand work
  • Compliance review
  • Executive reporting
  • Large content operations

Pricing is custom. Published ceilings run from $25,000 to well beyond $50,000.

How do pricing models compare?

  • Monthly retainer ($1,500–$10,000+): best for ongoing growth. Watch for vague deliverables.
  • One-off audit ($1,500–$15,000): best for finding gaps first. Make sure it includes an action plan.
  • Hybrid (retainer + milestone fees): good for migrations and big content pushes. Watch fees stacking up.
  • Hourly ($100–$250/hr): good for consulting. Cap the hours.
  • Performance-based: rarely a good idea. It rewards easy keywords over valuable ones.

Retainers are the most common model. Many specialists suggest a paid audit first, then a retainer.

What pushes the price up?

1. Industry competition. Legal, finance, healthcare and SaaS pay the most. More funded rivals, plus expert review and compliance.

2. Number of AI platforms. Google AI Overviews alone is the baseline. One agency adds roughly 20–30% of scope per extra platform. That’s one vendor’s estimate, but each engine cites differently. In Kevin Indig’s analysis of three platforms, 91% of citations appeared on only one.

3. Content volume and expertise. Two generalist posts and eight expert-reviewed ones are different products.

4. Off-site work. Digital PR, reviews, community presence. Ahrefs found brand mentions correlate with AI Overview appearances at 0.664.

5. Your starting point. Technical debt and thin content cost more to fix first.

6. Site size. A 30-page service site is not a 50,000-product store.

7. Reporting depth. Prompt tracking and dashboards need tools and analyst time.

What do AI SEO tools cost?

Profound (AI tracking)

~$99–$399+/mo

Semrush

Screaming Frog

$279/year

A lean DIY stack runs roughly $50 to a few hundred dollars a month. One published B2B model budgeted $1,100–$1,300 a month to track about 200 prompts.

Some agencies bundle tools into the retainer. Others pass them through. Ask.

In-house, freelancer or agency?

  • DIY with tools: $50–$1,000/mo. Cheapest, but it costs your time.
  • Freelancer: around $1,350/mo average for general SEO (Ahrefs survey). Good for isolated tasks, harder for a multi-platform strategy.
  • Agency: $2,000–$10,000/mo for most. You get a team, but you need a tight scope.
  • In-house team (specialist + writer + tools): about $14,000–$17,200/mo in the US, before design, development and overhead. Full control, fixed cost.

Until you have enough work for a full team, an agency or hybrid setup usually costs less.

Bar chart comparing monthly AI SEO costs: DIY tools, freelancer, agency, and a US in-house team of about $14,000–$17,200

US agency or India-based agency: what's the real difference?

If you’re a US business, you’ll see two price tiers for the same kind of work.

Where the agency is based

Typical monthly retainer (SEO overall)

North America

$2,500–$10,000+

Western Europe

$2,000–$8,000+

South Asia (incl. India)

$1000–$2,000+

For AI work specifically, one India-based benchmark puts Indian pricing roughly 40–60% below comparable US pricing for the same scope. Another Indian agency quotes 30–50% below for general SEO.

Why the gap exists: mostly labor cost. Skilled hours cost less to buy in India. It’s an overhead difference, not automatically a quality difference.

The honest caveat: one large survey describes South Asia as the biggest technical talent pool, but notes that quality varies a lot. So vet the agency, not the country.

Before you hire any India-based agency, check:

  • US results. Named case studies for US sites, not just traffic screenshots.
  • US market knowledge. US search results, US buyer language, US compliance needs in your industry.
  • Time zone overlap. India runs roughly 9½ to 13½ hours ahead of US zones. Ask which hours they cover live.
  • Writing quality. Who writes and edits, and are they native-level in US English?
  • Pricing in USD. Fixed scope, clear invoices, no surprise add-ons.
  • Account ownership. You should own your analytics, Search Console and tracking accounts.

Price should lower your cost, not your standards.

What costs extra?

This is where budgets quietly grow. Ask before you sign.

Add-on

Typical extra

AI/GEO layer on an SEO retainer

$900+/mo

Link building or placements

$500–$3,000+/mo

Digital PR

$2,000–$8,000+/mo

Content per piece

$100–$500+

Full technical audit

$1,500–$5,000

Local listings and GBP

$200–$800/mo

One cost nobody invoices: your own team’s time. AI SEO needs product, sales and expert input. Under-budget those hours and the program slows down.

How to set your budget

Don’t start from what agencies charge. Start from what a customer is worth.

  1. Customer value. Use gross-margin lifetime value.
  2. Allowable spend. Pick the share you’d happily pay to win one. 20% is a common start.
  3. Customers per month. Estimate what organic and AI discovery can realistically send at maturity.

Monthly ceiling = customers per month × lifetime value × allowable share

Example (made-up numbers):

  • Lifetime value: $6,000
  • Allowable share: 20% = $1,200 per customer
  • Expected new customers: 4 a month
  • Ceiling: $4,800 a month

Results lag by 3–12 months. Treat the first half-year as an investment and judge it on leading indicators.

What do real-world budgets look like?

Planning scenarios built from the bands above. These are not client results.

Local service business (one metro area): $1,000–$2,500/mo

  • Google Business Profile
  • Local schema
  • Review strategy
  • Tight FAQ library
  • Track 10–20 prompts

Growing SaaS or B2B services firm: $4,000–$9,000/mo

  • Comparison and alternatives pages
  • Answer-first articles
  • Entity and schema work
  • Third-party mentions
  • Track 100–200 prompts on 3+ platforms

Ecommerce store with thousands of products: $5,000–$12,000/mo

  • Category structure
  • Product schema
  • Buying guides and comparisons
  • Review signals
  • Crawl and index cleanup

How to read an AI SEO proposal

A proposal worth paying for answers six questions in plain English:

  1. Which AI platforms, by name?
  2. How many prompts are tracked, and with what tool?
  3. What’s delivered each month, in numbers?
  4. Who does the work? A manageable load for a lead strategist is about 10–15 accounts.
  5. What are the 90-day milestones? Is there a baseline audit?
  6. What’s billed separately?

Red flags:

  • Guaranteed rankings or citations
  • A full GEO program under about $1,500 with no tool named
  • A secret proprietary method nobody explains
  • Reports that outweigh actual production
  • Performance-only contracts
  • Bulk AI-written content with no human editing

How to measure whether it's working

Track four numbers every month. Read them together.

  1. Prompt win rate: share of tracked prompts where you’re mentioned or cited.
  2. Branded search growth: visible in Google Search Console.
  3. Assisted conversions: leads touched by organic or AI referrals.
  4. Cost per qualified lead: retainer plus tools, divided by qualified leads.

Citations up but branded searches flat? You may be cited for the wrong queries.

Branded searches up but leads flat? Check your landing pages before blaming the agency.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AI SEO cost per month?

Most credible retainers run $2,000 to $10,000 a month. Entry-level starts near $1,500, and enterprise can exceed $25,000. Scope sets the price.

How much does AI SEO cost in the US?

US agencies typically charge $2,500 to $10,000+ a month for SEO overall, with the AI layer often adding $900 or more. Mid-market AI-focused retainers commonly land between $2,000 and $10,000.

Is AI SEO more expensive than traditional SEO?

Usually, yes. Many agencies add $900+ a month for the AI layer. One India-based benchmark puts GEO retainers at roughly 1.8 to 3 times traditional SEO pricing.

What's the difference between GEO and AEO pricing?

The work overlaps, and many agencies bundle both. AEO often sits around $1,500–$5,000 a month. GEO can reach about $8,000 when it includes entity building, third-party citations and review signals.

Is $3,000 a month enough?

For one platform in a low-to-moderate competition niche, it can fund a solid foundation. For competitive industries or several platforms, usually not.

How much should a small business spend?

Local businesses often do well at $1,000–$2,500 a month. Small businesses competing nationally typically need $1,500–$3,000 or more.

Is hiring an India-based AI SEO agency a good idea for a US business?

It can be. Pricing is often 40–60% lower for similar scope. But quality varies, so check US case studies, time zone overlap, writing quality and account ownership first.

Can I do AI SEO myself?

Yes, if you have the time. Tools can cost $50–$1,000 a month. The real cost is hours spent learning, writing and tracking.

How long does it take to work?

First signals appear in 2–4 months. Real traction takes 4–9 months for most industries. SaaS, healthcare and legal run longer.

Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Most cited pages come from the organic top 10, and Google says the same fundamentals apply. AI SEO builds on a healthy SEO base.

The bottom line

AI SEO costs what the work costs: skilled hours, time to earn mentions off your site, and tools to see if it’s working.

A fair price has named platforms, counted deliverables, a baseline and a measurement plan. A cheap price usually means one of those is missing.

Set a ceiling from customer value. Run a paid audit first. Then commit to a retainer.
